VP Engineering


Role:

This role has multiple responsibilities. The person will lead the engineering team; it's a hands on role of architecture and developing as well as managing, setting the technical vision and strategy, hire/fire responsibility, budgeting, etc. This person will also be the CEO's partner in running the company at a strategic and operational level and help define the culture of who we want to be.

  • Lead the entire engineering department and report directly to the CEO.
  • Set the architecture of the product
  • Mentor more junior developers
  • Responsible for establishing operating procedures, work assignments, planning, and all project management activities
  • Oversee outsourcing (if you determine that we should)
  • Hiring additional staff and/or contract out work as necessary
  • Drive the product roadmap
  • Work with the CEO to set the direction of the company
  • Report progress to the board
  • This is a leadership role, but very hands on

Experience:
  • 6+ years software experience
  • 2+ years ruby experience
  • You have architected web based products
  • You have run software engineering teams and have appropriate project management experience
  • You have delivered large scale software projects
  • You have worked in a startup environment
  • You don't wait to be told what to do, rather you propose to your boss what you should be doing to achieve the company goals
  • You enjoy the chaos and uncertainty in startups
  • You are fun to be around and your co-workers like you

We have a basic platform right now and are looking for you to take the vision and make it your own. It is built in ruby and running on the amazon cloud, as for the specific gems and other technologies choices, you are free to make your own calls on that.

We are willing to consider a tech lead/architect for this role, even without significant management/leadership experience if we see the potential in you. Compensation includes both a startup level salary (adjustable after the next round of funding) and significant equity component.

Ruby Developer


Responsibilities:
  • Roll-out dependable software to support major publishing organizations and paying online consumers
  • Establish engineering best practices such as code reviews, design guidelines, and check-in policies
  • Improve performance, scalability, and availability of our systems
  • Communicate with technology and business teammates

Experience:
  • 2 yrs demonstrated coding skills in Ruby on Rails
  • 3 years of MySQL development experience
  • 5 years of software development experience
  • Experience/familiarity with Mongrel or Passenger Phusion
  • 2 years of working in an apache environment
  • SVN
  • Knowledge of Linux and open-source technologies
  • Familiarity with agile development practices
  • Solid understanding of Service Oriented Architecture/SOAP
  • Understanding of semantic web
  • Experience working with C/C++ plus
  • ActivePresenter a plus
  • Strong Javascript/AJAX/JSON/JQuery skills are a plus
